what gear do you keep in your rig?
« on: January 28, 2010, 09:59:53 PM »
I know I'm new on the forum I did a search and didn't find a thread addressing this.

I'm a big fan of being prepared for anything, so lets see what y'all keep in your rig.
I'll start.
My back of Jeep gear, not pictured is my GHB and 12v compressor.
Everything.

Recovery gear.
12ft Kevlar sling, 2 4ft nylon slings, a bunch of shackles, load binders,a couple cheap radios, some small parts, ammo, rescue rope and small slingshot.

Big tow chain and Harrington chain comealong inside a old sunflower seed bucket.

Crescent socket and wrench set.

Small hand tools and impact sockets .

Hilti battery impact gun and fluke tester.

Also in back but you can't see, small shovel, fluids and Jack.

Hope you have a full size spare tire as well.  Sorry guys I took my statement back.  Thought I had seen it on the rules.

Hope you keep all that heavy stuff tied down. That big ole come-along or a metal toolbox is the last thing I would want coming at my head in a roll.

As for myself, I only bring the essentials. Wrenches that fit the most common nuts/bolts on my truck, screwdrivers, pliers, and some rags. Also need to have a good hammer small rachet straps and some zip ties. Basically enough stuff to get off the trail. I don't feel the need to haul around axleshaft/driveshaft/hubs/etc.

As for recovery gear...60" Highlift, straps and a few d-rings and a snatch block.

Everything gets tied/bolted down securly before headin out.

First, I have a License to carry firearms AKA carry permit. I keep extra ammo for my carry sidearm and it stays home when I travel where it is not permitted. (And I do tend not to frequent places that restrict my legal right to carry)

Also my gear is tied down and I have never had a issue with it. Yes I also have a full size Spare.

First thing is leave the ammo at home please.  Not allowed at the park.
Really ? Is it not allowed because you think it's not or is it not allowed because you don't like ammo ? I've heard of people not liking gun's,, but ammo is a new one for me.

You do also realize that at any time of the year the park has people hunting on the property ? Hence the " Hunt Club " sign's around the park.

Granted, you shouldn't be flaunting any weapon in most place's, unless your close to my camp. Then i wanna see it, hold it, play with it, make " pow pow " noises and most likely so will everyone else with me.

Any person over 21 can legally openly carry a pistol on their side without any permit in Pennsylvania.

Now with our second amendment out of the way.

You can never carry to much stuff.
Axle shafts
u-joint's
tape
zip tie's
"C" clamp's ( I pulled these out once to change a u-joint and had 30 people staring at me funny. Yes i carry them )
assorted hammers etc.
elec. kit
Starter
Alternator
fan/serpentine belt's

One thing i didn't notice is " emergency " stuff.
Everyone should have at LEAST 2 small fire extinguishers.
On top of that a basic first aid kit.

It really sucks when a small fire burn's up an entire rig because nobody had an extinguisher.

No high lift Jack yet.

+1 on the firearms being 100% legal in our great state.
Fire extinguishers is something I need to add and I have a fairly nice FAK that lives in the back seat.
Spare parts are nice but they rotate depending on what I have.

Good God.  Lose some of that weight, and you'd be amazed at how much easier it is to climb things.  You are never THAT far away from the office at RC.  I leave all of that junk in my tow rig.

Basic hand tools, some fuse's and wire and test light, 3 u-joints, 1 spare brake line.

I saw a tool box push a little kid partway out of a rig mid flop. I cant beleive he wasnt hurt. Tie EVERYTHING down.

Wheeling, hell all that @#$% I keep I'm my Jeep 24 7 except the heavy tow chain that's mostly for winter. Definitely tie your gear down nothing like a tool box to the brain pan to @#$% up your day. I must need a better power inverter mine definitely can't run my mini Miller.

I found this out the long hard way, I was the guy that had almost everything. I'm in the prosess of a "Jeep diet" so far I took out 68 lbs of stuff I can do without. And I'm moveing weight around to correct the weight bias. I can't leave things at the staging area cuz I drive the Jeep (no tow) so I will have some spare items with me, but not as much as before. I have not gone through my tool bag yet but I'm planning on cutting that in half.

Yeah I agree, find out what you would need most, take that stuff. The weight will do more damage than good.

fire Extinguisher and 1st aid kit should be #1 in any rig, we have saved peoples rig with them already...right Zach?

I used to carry @#$% near enough tools and junk to be able to rebuild the truck on the trail. Now I carry just a few things, small med kit, fire ext, recovery gear, cooler, and that's about it. I keep my spare on the trailer.

Having a YJ, storing gear is a bit of a challenge, but anytime i am on the trail, I have my full recovery kit (Snatch block, snatch strap, tow strap, 4 shackles, tree saver, winch control, gloves, E-tool, and hatchet all in a military tool bag), a 200 Piece Husky ratchet set (have yet to find something i needed any other tool for, and if i do i replace it), a small tool kit that I keep in a .50 cal can (Screwdrivers, ratcheting wrenches, torx bits, Allen bits, and any other tool that i use more then once when i am wrenching off the trail), and depending on who I am with a full toolbox with all my bigger tools (hammers, full wrench set, pry bars, bolt cutters, cheater pipe, breaker bar, etc.).  I store all of that tied down to the wheel wells in the back (No rear seat.) Then depending on where I am going and for how long, the center is reserved for camping gear/food/water/ beer/ etc. In the cab area I have a 2 D Cell LED mag lite, a fire extinguisher bolted to the floor in front of the shifter between the driver and passenger, my CB, and a 2 liter Camelback attached to the back of both the driver and passenger seat.  I have yet to use most of the gear.  The most important piece of gear I take with me is someone else in case something goes wrong, we have a way to get out, someone to save my bacon if I get hurt, and someone to laugh at when they get stuck.  Its all about the little things.
